General Information
The University of Extremadura (UEx) is
a public Spanish university, located in
Extremadura. It was established in 1973,
and today more than 200 research
groups and more than one thousand
competitive scientific lines give a superb
research background to the University.
The Power Electrical and Electronic Sys-
tems Research and Development Group
(PE&ES), is located in Badajoz (Spain). It
is composed by different professional
profiles covering Doctors, Engineers and
Physicists and has more than 15 years of
experience in the fields of power elec-
tronics applied to power grids, renewable
energy sources, smart grids, energy stor-
age, electric vehicles, and monitoring and
control systems.
Facilities
PE&ES has several labs hosted in two differ-
ent buildings, covering both basic research
(where PhD Students do their Thesis un-
der the guidance of Senior Researchers)
and applied research (for products and
prototype manufacturing and testing).
PE&ES has advanced equipment to design,
build and validate converters and their
control algorithms, and various types of
rapid prototyping platforms, as dSpace,
National Instrument or Speedgoat.
Specifically, it has the infrastructure require-
ments for testing converters up to 15kW,
as Grid or PV plants emulators. A new lab
rated up to 100kW will be available in 2017.
Competences
PE&ES can design and develop new con-
verters using the most promising topolo-
gies and technologies and their corre-
sponding controllers. Auxiliary electronic
circuits, as improved drivers or advanced
measurements boards using advance sen-
sors or remote monitoring, can also be de-
signed and developed.
PE&ES has developed several convert-
ers using SiC or GaN semiconductors and
new IPM products to validate their use in
high power renewable energy, smart grids
and electric vehicle applications.
