Parallel Connection with Interphase Transformer

  • Overview

For the following converter system two three-phase half-bridge recifiers are connected in parallel, and both half-bridge rectifiers show a phase shift between their input voltage systems (created by the transformer configuration). Due to the phase difference in the partial output voltages udi1 and udi2 it is necessary to couple the two half-bridges via an inductor. The output voltage udi shows 6 pulses per mains period. In this animation only diodes are shown, not thyristors, in order to demonstrate the concept. The converter is employed for high-power DC drives where thyristors are preferred.

  • Operation
    • Change the coupling inductor. Lower inductance increases the load current ripple.
    • Change the resistors. They are very small (losses!) and help to balance the partial load currents i1 and i2.
