SiC Power Center – Promote imple-
mentation of SiC Power Electronics
The power electronics is becoming more
efficient and smarter by integration with
ICT. The vision of the future society en-
compasses integration of power electron-
ics, SiC and ICT technologies in the struc-
ture and management of the multifaceted
smart total electric energy system based
on renewable energy sources. Some of
the elements of the future energy system
are electric energy generation, distribution
and storage facilities, industrial infrastruc-
ture, mass transportation systems, e-mo-
bility, intelligent houses and data servers.
The SiC (silicon carbide) Power Center,
led by Acreo, was founded in 2012 by
Acreo Swedish ICT, KTH and Swerea
Kimab. It provides a platform for coop-
eration between industry, research insti-
tutes and academia with main objective
to promote introduction of SiC power
electronics in the applications where high
energy efficiency, compactness and high-
temperature operation offer significant
system advantages. The main objective
of the cooperation is to explore the full
potential of SiC electronics for future ap-
plications, increased competitiveness and
sustainable development.
Acreo has been active in the field since
1993 covering all aspects of SiC technol-
ogy from epitaxy to device design and
manufacturing which resulted in an ex-
tensive knowledge base. Resources at
Acreo include complete process line,
electrical evaluation laboratory with high
voltage, high current and EMC measure-
ment capabilities and a high performance
computing environment. CAD tools are
available for the advanced design and
simulation of electrical, electromagnetic,
thermal, mechanical and optical devices
and systems.
SiC Power Center welcomes industry
partners throughout the whole value
chain. The center members today in-
clude some of Sweden’s leading automo-
tive, energy systems and power electron-
ics companies: Alstom Power, Ascatron,
Bombardier Transportation, Elektronik-
Konsult, Eskilstuna ElektronikPartner,
Inmotion Technologies, SEPS, Swerea IVF
and Volvo AB.
The center organizes each year an Inter-
national SiC Power Electronics Applica-
tions Workshop (ISiCPEAW) in May/June
in Stockholm.
